Sachin Tendulkar made his debut for India in the year 1989. He played his first Test match against Paksitan in November that year, and his first ODI in December, also against Pakistan. The fact that he retired form ODIs only last year and will play his last Test this month goes to show how long he has been associated with Indian cricket and why he is thought to have been playing for India since forever by most of us. It is pretty obvious and well-known that he has a lot of huge cricketing records to his name, having been fit and going strong on the cricket pitch for so long. So large is the list of all his records that he surely must have the record of having the most number of coveted records in world cricket today, and most of them are likely to remain unbroken, in the near future at least.
Here is a list of 10 of his best feats as far as statistics go
1. Runs scored
He has an aggregate of over 50,000 runs in all forms of cricket. He is the highest run-getter in both Tests (15,837) and ODIs (18,426). And he is way ahead of other cricketers too, with Ricky Ponting following him with 13,378 runs in Tests and 13,704 runs in ODIs. He is the only ODI cricketer to be above the 14,000 mark and he has beaten it by a margin of more than 4,000 runs.
2. Centuries made
Sachin has a total of 100 international 100s to his name, the most any player so far has been able to make, and this is very likely to remain that way for a very long time. He has 51 Test centuries and 49 ODI ones, and was the first one to reach 50 and 75 international tons. Kallis follows in 2nd place in the longer version with 44 Test hundreds and Ricky Ponting with 30 tons is 2nd highest on the ODI list.
Sachin also has a one-day double hundred to his name, and was the first one to achieve this feat. Now, Sehwag has also scored a double ton.
3. Awards received
Sachin holds a record in this too. He has received the most number of man of the match awards in ODIs (62), and also the most number of man of the series awards (17). He has also received the Padma Shri, Padma Vibhushan, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and the Arjuna Award from the Indian Government, and he is the only cricketer to get all these honours.
4. Games played
Sachin has appeared in the most number of Test (198) and one-day international games (463) in the history of cricket. He has the unique record of the most number of consecutive ODI appearances as well (185). If all goes as planned, he will finish his Test career after his 200th Test.
5. World Cup records
Sachin is the highest run-getter in World Cups (2,278) in the six World Cups that he has appeared in (he won his last World Cup – in 2011). He also holds the record for most runs in a single World Cup, with the massive total of 673 runs that he got in the 2003 edition, in which India reached the finals. He even has the most number of man of the match awards in World Cups.
6. Calendar year performance
In ODIs, Sachin has the record of most runs (1,894) in a calendar year; he scored them in the year 1998. He scored 9 centuries in the year as well, again a world record for most centuries in a calendar year. He has scored 1000-plus runs in a year 7 times, which is again a record.
This is a special area of the game where not many have done wonders, but Sachin has. He has been involved in 99 partnerships that have yielded 100-plus runs. His pairing with Sourav Ganguly holds the record for most runs by an opening pair (6,609) that included 21 century partnerships, also a world record. Tendulkar also holds the record for being part of the highest ODI partnership ever, a total of 331 along with Rahul Dravid against New Zealand.
8. Dominance over all nations
Tendulkar has scored more than 1,000 ODI runs against all playing nations, and has also scored Test centuries against all of the Test-playing ones. That gives an idea of how well he has mastered the sport and how no nation has been able to curb the runs coming from his bat.
9. Runs in wins
Sachin has most the runs to his name (11,157) that have been scored in a winning cause in one-dayers. That says enough about his match-winning capabilities and the amount of service that he has done for Indian cricket over all these years.
Sachin has the most runs in boundaries in one-dayers, with 2,016 fours to his name which amount to 8,064 runs, the most that any player has amassed by sending the ball to the boundary. He has struck 333 of those against Australia, one of the best teams in cricket in the past decade, and 303 against Sri Lanka. As for sixes, he has 195 of them to his name and is 4th on the list of most sixes hit by any player.
